Innofest, which tests innovations at festivals, put Taaly to the test at Popronde Groningen on 5 October 2023. The question: what motivates festival visitors to sign up as a taalcoach, money, in-app points or symbolic karma?

Test before you roll out

Innofest describes Taaly as the digital bridge between languages and cultures: newcomers practise Dutch in video calls with local taalcoaches. At the festival, different rewards were tested side by side. A second test at Melkweg in Amsterdam was meant to compare the outcomes from Groningen with those from the capital.

Where Taaly stood at the time

Taaly had around 900 members then, two thirds newcomers and one third taalcoaches, and was working with OpenEmbassy on measuring impact. The weekly impact questions in the app were answered by 70 percent of users.

“Testing is essential before you roll out a product.”

Taaly today

Taaly has since grown into the digital integration assistant for newcomers: language, participation and work in one app, with more than 30,000 learners, 4,200 taalcoaches and partnerships with 18 municipalities.
